Steve Boctor [MDiv 1997] has experienced first-hand how foundational families are to our culture. “How our society moves, the direction that it is going to go, is totally dependent on how strong, healthy and godly our families are,” he says. This belief led him to write a practical book titled The ABC’s of Parenting and a blog about families, marriage and mental illness.
Tyndale was instrumental in Steve’s development, including his desire to write the book. The idea came during a moment of silence for his spiritual formation course when he wrote down his life goals. “Tyndale has helped form me into the person that I am today, in every way – life, personally, educationally, in ministry.” Using his experiences as a pastor, parent and spouse of someone with mental illness, he is changing lives.
One member of Steve’s church was deeply worried about her daughter’s dysfunctional family. The home’s atmosphere was strained, and visits with her grandchildren were difficult. She recommended that her daughter read Steve’s book. Months later, she came to Steve in tears, saying, “You do not know the difference that book has made in the home.”
Another man sent Steve an email, saying that the blog was encouraging as he and his wife struggled with her mental illness. This is Steve’s motivation. He hopes that through the experiences God has given him, he can make an impact: “That is my heartbeat. If you build strong, healthy families, you will change communities and you will change the world.”
